Great Cooks Wins Toronto Star Eaters’ Choice Award |
|
|
Great Cooks and the T Spot, a subterranean spot in the downtown Bay, is this year's clear favourite. Run by Esther Benaim and Maggie McKeown, this stylish school offers cooking classes and a loose-leaf tea shop.
But let two of its customers do the heavy persuading: "Esther and Maggie are the most professional chef/instructors I have ever met and dealt with," says reader Emily Heung in her nomination.
"They are friendly, professional and knowledgeable about everything when it comes to food. Their staff are the same." Heung took a class by Surreal Gourmet television star Bob Blumer and remembers the "comfortable feeling in the room like everyone already knew each other" and the fact "you never had to ask for anything because it was so well executed and organized."
Sharon O'Meara also nominates Great Cooks, noting she has taken a couple of dozen classes at schools in Toronto and Atlanta, and has gone on cooking vacations in France and Italy.
She says registration was easy and smooth, there was an array of classes to choose from, the costs were reasonable, the owners/staff were efficient and helpful, the seating allowed close viewing and participation, the kitchen was well-equipped, the tastings were ample and the instructor (Daniel Jalovec, owner of the Juniper Grill and Wine Bar in Orangeville) was knowledgeable and enthusiastic. O'Meara's only complaint? No one followed up for an opinion on the class or to provide future class schedules. Customers — they're your biggest fans and toughest critics.
